Will 2009 be the year you stop waiting for that 'big break' and start taking control of your own career?

''Tired of struggling to build a long term career in performing arts?  You have come to the right website.''
John Byrne, Dear John columnist & career advisor to
The Stage Newspaper

From The X Factor to American Idol, Britain's Got Talent to all those TV searches for the ''Next West End Musical Star'' the promise of  '15 minutes of Fame', is never far from our screens.

But despite what 'reality tv' would have you believe, there are always going to be far more performers looking for jobs than there are jobs available. Even for the few who do survive the ritual humiliation of the auditions and bootcamps, turning that short time in the spotlight into a long term career is a lot harder than it looks.

Thankfully, the picture of a performance career presented on primetime TV is a far cry from the reality. Yes, showbusiness is a competitive industry where success* is far from guaranteed, but if you have talent, commitment and common sense, you can greatly increase your chances of making it work on your own terms rather the whims of celebrity 'judges'. *What is ''success''? Sadly, while there are many excellent courses which will help you to develop the artistic side of what you do, the equally vital skill of taking your talent and turning it into a sustainable business can still be very hard to find help with. This is what John Byrne has been helping performers do for years, and via this site, what he would like to help you do, too.

the right things!''
